Perception map
The perception map shows which areas of your webpage a user will percieve during the first few seconds of viewing.
Interpretation of the perception map is straightforward. Transparent areas will be observed; elements in the black areas will be overlooked by most users. If important information is placed outside of the perceived part of your webpage, you should reconsider your design. The attention map can help you find appropriate design adjustments.
Background knowledge
To obtain the perception map, we combine the prediction of fixations with knowledge about the human eye.
Since only a small part of the human retina, the fovea has high enough resolution for detailed perception, as is required for e.g. reading text, important information has to be fixated with this area.
We calculate the perception map by determining for each pixel if it will at some point be perceived with the fovea, given our predicted pattern of fixations.
